Rajinikanth gets Indias highest honor in cinema industry today. The Dada Saheb Phalke award. Legends such as Raj Kapoor to Amitabh Bacchan got the same award, considered like the lifetime achievement Oscar  of Indian cinema.



Disclaimer: I'm a big Rajini fan. So this might sound like a hagiography.

Sivaji Rao Gaekwad aka Rajinikanth.

In Tamil Nadu, and among Tamil community where he has a massive fan base, this is a huge thing. But also this sparked a mini controversy, why Kamal Hassan who is considered a "better" actor by critics was not given and Rajinikanth was given.

I have few things to say:

1. There is no comparison between talent. Rajini is a great actor himself. See the variety of acting from Moondru Mugam, Thillu Mullu, Thalapathy, Basha, Robot, Sivaji to Pettai. Rajini can act without effort just with his eyes, hands, walk, pose, style or natural charm. 

2. Rajini is considered a directors actor. He can mould himself like what director wants, with no self interest or opinion. If you want him to act like a coolie or sage or businessman or policeman the directors imprint is seen in Rajinikanth.

3. Rajini is a producers actor. 98% of his hundreds of films yielded more money than what producers invested. 25% are super hits making multiple times profits for producers. I bet even Reliance industries stocks can't do this in Indian stock markets.

4. Rajini is a fans actor. If fans say throw a cigarette he will do even when 60 years. The entire Superstar image his style, walk, talk, dialogues, action, comedy is to give fans a great time for 3 hours in cinema. 

5. Rajini is a great human being. Philanthropist.  Gentleman. Grounded. Authentic. He stops acting once he is outside the studio. People can see his bald head and white hair. He never hides the fact he smokes or drinks. He has conducted thousands of marriages free of cost in his mantapam. He gave lakhs of rupees to policeman's families after Robot movie (as he regretted killing policeman, even in a movie). 

6. Rajini is a spiritual person who respects all religions. Never said anything controversial against any religion including his own Hindu religion. He quit politics the day his doctors said you cannot campaign due to his own ill health and corona virus.

7. Rajini is the hall mark of humility. When asked who he considers as greatest actors, he said Amitabh Bacchan and Kamal Hassan.


The Superstar himself took to Twitter to share a long note in Tamil, expressing his profound gratitude at the honour. Rajinikanth wrote, “I wholeheartedly thank the central government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for conferring me Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest award in the Indian Film Industry. I thank my bus driver and friend Raj Bahadur who discovered my acting talent and encouraged me, my brother Sathyanarayana Rao Gaekwad who sacrificed a lot while we were struggling in poverty to make me an actor, my guru K Balachander for creating ‘the Rajinikanth.’ I also thank my directors, producers, distributors, technicians, theatre owners, media, and Tamil people who have given me life. I dedicate this award to my fans across around the world. I thank Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, Deputy Chief Minister O Pannerselvam, opposition leader and my friend MK Stalin, my friend Kamal Haasan, other state and central leaders, industry friends, and my well-wishers. Long Live Tamils, May Tamil Nadu prosper, Jai Hind!”

His reply shows he has never forgotten his humble background, his respect for brother, Guru, his fans, his friends, producers, his political neutrality, loyalty to the land (Tamil nadu) which gave him everything despite coming in from Bangalore as Maharastrian.

This is also a big tribute to Tamil Nadu and Tamils. Tamils have this great capability of assimilating outsiders from other states as one of their own. Being a Tamil is about giving respect and learning one of the worlds oldest surviving languages - Tamil. 

Its perhaps the only state where you can have anyone irrespective of their background shine and rise to the highest possible heights. Both DMK and ADMK origins are from DK founded by Periyar who is a Kannadiga by birth. We had two Chief ministers (MGR and Janaki) who were Malayalees. Our No.1 Actor and Superstar is Rajinikanth a Maharastrian from Bangalore. There are umpteen other examples of business man, sports people, scientists, IAS officers who were from other states who made Chennai their home and prospered. Though I'm a Proud Bangalorean, I'm equally proud of my place of birth Chennai and being a Tamil for this reason. 

And I'm immensely proud of Thalaiva. The one and only Superstar. Sivaji Rao Gaekwad aka Rajinikanth.

12th December, we celebrate the birthday of the one and only..SUPERSTAR RAJINIKATH.

To all my good friends, Rajini critics, who can't empathise with my apparently blind worship, I just have one question..AT 68 years how many cine stars in India can deliver a 300 crore superhit movie? Robot 2.0.

GOD OF STYLE,
SAINT OF SIMPLICITY,
AGELESS WONDER,
TIMELESS PERSONALITY 

When a Rajinikant fan watches his movie,
We suspend our belief systems,
We Forget the plot, story, direction, music,
We only come for his swag, style, dialogue delivery, action and dance.
