Some of you have listened to my sessions on leadership in digital era. I usually joke, you can't beat a light bulb by making a better and cheaper candle. Digital business is like that.
I frequently refer to a book, by Ram Charan, on new rules for competing in digital age. ola founder with his ola scooter exhibits many of this.
1. Hyper scale. They can think market scaling 100x not 100% and a market which does not exist. He has already built the worlds largest scooter factory, bigger than Delhi and Mumbai airports put together.
2. They build personalised experiences starting with customer first (segment of one). See video you will understand how the scooter software changes for every user, he his wife, brirger, mom etc. also From colors, to types of use (speedster to economy users) he covered a lot.
3. They focus on massive cash generation and not earnings per share. Rs.499 booking amount is cash in multiple crores even before first scooter is delivered in October
4. They have a digital platform at core. The MOVE OS is that. And they compete not as a company and as an ecosystem. See his call for all auto manufacturers to build ecosystem make vehicles petrol free by 2025. He already set up 100,000 charging stations across India.
5. Company culture designed for innovation, speed, scale, Customer focus, personalisation right from Day one.
